NEED HELP FAST!

Postby HeavenonWheels on Tue Mar 09, 2010 5:09 pm

Okay now my car goes into reverse..but when I put it into Drive, it just revs up. I put it into low gear and it moves.
What can cause this???

Might sound like a stupid question but do you have an adequate amount of trans fluid in there?

yup, plenty on it in there :-(

it backs up perfectly fine..but when I put it into drive or (2) or (L) it does the same shit.
Before it would run in those two just not Drive..but nothing.
I heard something about the axle or something..does anyone have any idea what it can be?

I'm betting your shifting solenoid has gone bad...can't think of what it's called though...it's the part that used to be vacuum controlled on the older cars before they started using solenoids. Make sure it's plugged in and wires aren't rubbed

I just checked in my book and apparently there are multiple shift control solenoids....soo...if it's that I would consider taking it to a shop, I can't help you much seeing as how I don't mess with auto's. Normally if a car is doing that you would check to make sure the vacuums going to it are attached and not leaking (newer cars use solenoid, so instead you check that the plugs/wires are ok) and if that's ok you replace it, but you have many, so I'm not sure what to tell you. Did you take off the intake piping to see down in there good and see if everything is hooked up and nothing loose?

FYI if you have too much fluid in the transmission you can have basically similar results as if you were low on fluid, but that doesn't sound like the problem here.
How high does the engine rev when you put it in the forward gears? Just curious. Trying to look through my manual, but I have a feeling you wont be able to do much without a scanner, or without getting messy. and spending money on tranny fluid.
I wonder if you might be able to check the for an open the wiring between the transmission computer and transmission solenoids, but that is located kind of ahead of your ECM towards the front of your car, and I don't know if you would be able to get to the connectors very well.
There are good cars that get you from point A to point B.
And then there are great cars that can get you into trouble.

well it revs pretty high..I don't try n rev it to high..like pass 4k because i don't want a bigger problem then i already have.
But when I did check there was a bit more tranny fluid then needed.

I would be more than willing to check what ever need to be check..just let me know where it is haha.
I love my car..and came to the conclusion that IM NOT SELLING IT! even if it has to become a project car.
My father gave it to me before he died. He was gonna give me his car(92' Pontiac firebird) but it went with him.

So i fully appreciate every help you all give me.

Wow...your engine revs that high? Does it stay at that rpm?
A little bit extra fluid might be ok, but to me a little bit is literally just a very small amount past the hot on the dipstick at operating temp.
Are these the conditions that it first started under? How about service? When was the transmission last serviced? Did you have a power-flush done to clean out the whole system? (important for AT transaxel life) If not, when was the last time you changed your fluid? It could be helpful to know these basic things. I don't know how much I can tell you before I say take it to shop, but I'll give it a shot.
